What Are The Eco-Friendliness of Bamboo Flooring: A Renewable Resource?

One of the most eco-friendly types of wood floor is bamboo. It is a plant that grows rapidly and can be harvested multiple times over its life. In addition, it can grow well in soil that is nutrient poor. Unlike hardwoods, which can take up to a hundred years to mature, bamboo can be harvested in just five to six years. This process encourages the growth of new bamboo plant stands, making it a self-renewing resource.

Available In Vertical-Grain Or Horizontal-Grain Orientations

Bamboo Flooring Dubai can be harvested and used in many different ways, from strand woven floors to laminated planks. In a strand woven method, the strips of bamboo are arranged in vertically or horizontally and pressed together using a high-pressure system.

Another way to make a bamboo floor is to cut the stalks of the bamboo plant into strips and glue them together with an adhesive resin. The result is a product that resembles bamboo but has the look of a more uniform, straight-grained wood floor.

The resulting product is called "laminated bamboo." These products are available in vertical-grain or horizontal-grain orientations. Both have a lined, striated surface that shows off the characteristic nodes of the bamboo plant.

Spills And Stains Should Be Cleaned Up Quickly

These floors are also less likely to show scratches and dents than many other flooring options. Regular sweeping and dust mopping can keep your bamboo floors looking their best. Spills and stains should be cleaned up quickly, and a soft-bristled brush can remove scuffs and scratches.

Because of its durability, bamboo is a popular choice for commercial applications. Restaurants, kitchens, and other areas where heavy traffic is common can benefit from the toughness of this material.

Bamboo Flooring can be crafted into a variety of colors, ranging from pale straw to deep mahogany tones. It can also be stained to a more vibrant color, or carbonized, which uses steam and pressure to give the material a deeper hue.

Several bamboo flooring manufacturers have taken steps to ensure their materials are environmentally friendly. Some are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Others purchase raw materials from FSC-certified sources, and have their own proprietary low-VOC adhesives and finishes.

Quality Identifiers

In addition to certification from the FSC, some manufacturers also offer a product that is SCS FloorScore compliant. SCS FloorScore is a rigorous testing program developed by the Resilient Floor Covering Institute and based on scientific standards for indoor air quality emissions. It is not the only identifier of quality, but it is worth checking with manufacturers before buying a product.

SCS FloorScore is not a mandatory certification, but it can provide you with a roadmap to LEED or National Green Building Standard credits for low-emitting materials in a flooring system. Some manufacturers are even producing their own low-VOC products, and buying their raw materials only from FSC-certified sources.

Conclusion:

Formaldehyde: Some bamboo products contain urea formaldehyde, a VOC that is emitted through off-gassing. This VOC is harmful to indoor air quality and can cause respiratory irritation.
